Zimmer Golden Spirit Specs

The specifications of every Zimmer side by side: the original Golden Spirit and its four-door, the QuickSilver, and the revival's Golden Spirits. The original company published only its own figures, and only the QuickSilver is known to have been tested.

Every figure here comes from one of two kinds of source. The companies published their own, in specification sheets, brochures and price lists, and those are claims: what the maker said its car was. Only one Zimmer is known to have been weighed and timed by a magazine, the QuickSilver that Car and Driver tested in April 1987, and no test of a Golden Spirit has been found. The comparison gives each figure as its lead source has it, with a small asterisk where other sources give others.source 1source 2

Golden Spirit, 1980–88

Most of a Golden Spirit's mechanical specification was its donor Mustang's, so it changed with Ford's model years: the early cars had the 4.2 V8, those from 1983 the 5.0, and from 1984 there was fuel injection and a four-speed automatic with overdrive. The figures below are Zimmer's own, from its sheet of May 1984 and its press kit of 1987, for the cars of those years.

What Zimmer changed was the length. Ford's 1984 Mustang brochure gives the notchback a wheelbase of 2,550 mm (100.4 in) and a length of 4,549 mm (179.1 in); set against Zimmer's figures, by our arithmetic, the Golden Spirit's wheelbase is 1,057 mm (41.6 in) longer and the car about 886 mm (34.9 in) longer overall, so the whole stretch went between the wheels, and the overhangs together came out shorter than the Mustang's. It was also wider, by about 124 mm (4.9 in), and Zimmer's sheet gives front and rear tracks about 130 mm (5 in) wider than Ford's tread for the Mustang; why, no source says.

The weights of the time differ by up to about 80 kg (180 lb): Automotive News gave one figure in 1982, Zimmer another, marked "approx.", from 1984, and a dealer a third in 1986. None is known to have been measured, and the Fort Lauderdale News said in 1981 only that the conversion added about 230 kg (500 lb) to the Mustang. The performance figures are Zimmer's for 1987: an estimated time to 60 mph and a top speed its data sheet called the "maximum at full load". In town, the Fort Lauderdale News reported in 1981, the car did about 16 litres per 100 km (15 mpg US).source 3source 4source 5source 6source 7source 8source 9source 1

The four-doors, 1983–87

No dimensions, weight or engine for the Personal Limousine or the Four-Door Sedan have been found, in Zimmer's literature or any other source read, so their column holds only the years, the limousine's announced price, the body and the doors. The coupé's figures are not evidence for them: what the four-doors were built on is not known, as the Golden Spirit Sedan page explains.source 10source 1

QuickSilver, 1986–88

The QuickSilver is the one Zimmer with two sets of figures. Its engine and gearbox (transmission) agree in every source, Zimmer's and the magazine's alike, and its dimensions all but agree: the Fiero's own V6 and automatic, in a body lengthened by 406 mm (16 in) between the wheels and 330 mm (13 in) behind them. But Car and Driver's scales and stopwatch found more weight and less speed than Zimmer's data sheet promised, and by the time of its later brochure Zimmer's own weight for the car was within a few pounds of the magazine's. Where the two disagree, the comparison prints what Car and Driver measured and leaves Zimmer's figure to the asterisk's note.

Car and Driver measured more than the company ever published:source 2source 1source 11source 12source 13source 14source 15source 16

Revival two-doors, 1998–2013

Art Zimmer's company left the running gear alone too. Its cars, the Zimmer Neo-Classic Golden Spirits, kept the donor Mustang's engine, gearbox and drivetrain, "completely intact with the factory warranty", as he put it in 2009, and its fibreglass front and rear sections added about 180 kg (400 lb). The company's pages named the donor's V8 for the coupés of 1998 and kept the same engine text until about 2007. In 2009 Art Zimmer was building on the Mustang GT and offering the GT500 as an option for 2010. For 2016, under Heyman Motors, the price list claimed 435 hp from a Mustang GT of the 2016 model year, for a car of which no example has been found. The revival's published wheelbases disagree with one another, and none is known to have been measured.source 17source 18source 19source 20

Revival four-doors, 2001–11

The four-doors were Lincoln Town Cars, mostly new, built on the Town Car's own V8 and four-speed column-shift automatic, as Hagerty UK found on a four-door of the 2002 model year in Britain; the comparison gives the company's lengths for the Sedan and the long "L". In 2016 the website under Heyman Motors listed four-doors on the Cadillac CTS, at 420 hp or, as "R" versions, 640 hp. No such car has been found, and those figures are claims for cars that may never have been built.source 18source 21source 20
